JILL VERBICK

ARTIST STATEMENT - BIO

Life is a series of evolutions. We are always in flux. Change is sometimes difficult but necessary. Not every journey we take should be planned and many should be totally against our will.  What we have experienced defines us as individuals. Our past is a challenging and informative teacher. The things I paint and how I paint them are more than a record of who I am and where I’ve been. My work reflects my desire to grow. Art often leads me to places I can only imagine. The living follows.

In paint I create heroines and angels, protectors and survivors. From my heart to the canvas, they become real. I become more of what I create. I am larger and stronger because of the chances I take and my ability to freely and fully expose myself. Anais Nin said, “One’s world expands or contracts in proportion to one’s courage.” I long to discover a big world. The vastness of that landscape is ever inspiring.

Painting with brazen nakedness has led to a most incredible transformation. Vulnerability has created a strange and wondrous bond with the viewer. You may understand and admire, ignore or reject my work. I have no expectations of others. Those who see what I paint have the freedom to react as they like just as I am free to express. In the end we connect. Each time I expose my heart, there is someone eager to reach out and touch it. Intangible emotions are validated with color and form. A blank canvas is filled with imaginings. The solitude of the studio is filled with life. Paint mixed with substance creates an intimate conversation. The unknown journey continues. My passion is portraiture; however, I paint a wide range of subjects. My main mediums are acrylics and oils. I also work in pastel and charcoal. I am represented by Almont Gallery in Waukesha, The Flying Pig Gallery and Greenspace in Algoma, and The Studio Gallery and Café in Thiensville. My award winning works have been exhibited in many galleries and museums throughout the state. I am a full-time artist and art advocate. I also critique, teach and demonstrate portraiture, painting technique and art marketing.
