ARTIST STATEMENT

The beauty of nature is all around us.  All we have to do is open our eyes to see it.  Sometimes nature is subtle, sometimes it is bold.  It can be found in the country or the city.  It can be witnessed at any time, day or night.

To capture natures' beauty, one does not need to use color.  In my charcoal drawings, I try to capture instances of nature at its best.  Charcoal can transform a piece of paper into a scene lit by moonlight or the sun.  Eliminating the color from a scene helps me to convey the mood and feelings I get from the scenes I observe in everyday life.

The addition of color to my landscapes adds an emotional intrigue to the scene.  I take reality-based settings and through altering shapes and modifying colors, my paintings can convey my personal interpretation of the scene.  I hope the viewer enjoys them as much as I do.

MEDIA OF EXPRESSION:

Oil and Charcoal Landscapes

ARTIST'S BACKGROUND:

Living all of his life in southeast Wisconsin, Tom developed an eye for fine art by spending many hours at the art museums and art galleries in the Milwaukee area.  Whenever he had the opportunity to travel Tom would seek out museums and art galleries.  After starting a small collection of art for himself, Tom decided to try his hand at drawing.

Under James Prohl, a master of drawing in the traditional realist method, Tom learned to handle charcoal and render basic shapes, sizes, reflections, and lighting.  Mr. Prohl also taught him the basics of color and oil painting.  Tom has also studied under impessionist landscape artist, Lorin Willey.

Tom's art has been exhibited throughout Wisconsin and has won numerous awards.  He is a past president of the League of Milwaukee Artists and currently serves as vice-chair of Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors - Southeast Chapter.
